New Orleans/Charity Head Trauma/Injury Rule

Identifies patients after minor head trauma with loss of consciousness who are unlikely to require CT imaging, based on high-risk clinical criteria.

Parameters

New Orleans Rule Criteria (ANY present = CT required)any

Headache (any new headache after the injury, not including pre-existing chronic headache)Vomiting (any episode of vomiting since the injury)Age > 60 yearsDrug or alcohol intoxication (clinical evidence of intoxication, not just history of use)Deficits in short-term memory (anterograde amnesia — inability to recall events after the injury)Physical evidence of trauma above the clavicle (scalp laceration, contusion, hemotympanum, periorbital ecchymosis)Seizure (any seizure after the injury)
