NEXUS Chest Decision Instrument for Blunt Chest Trauma

Determines the need for chest X-ray imaging in patients with blunt chest trauma by identifying low-risk patients who can safely forgo radiography.

Parameters

NEXUS Chest Criteria (ANY present = Chest X-ray required)any

Age ≥ 45 yearsRapid heart rate (> 99 bpm at triage)Significant chest wall tenderness to palpationAltered alertness (GCS < 15 or known intoxication)Intoxication with alcohol or drugsDistracting painful injury (e.g., long bone fracture, significant laceration or crush)Respiratory complaint (dyspnea, pleuritic pain, cough, hemoptysis, or hypoxia)
