You have been treated for a high-pressure injection injury to your hand or finger
This is a serious injury that requires close follow-up with a hand surgery specialist
Even if your wound looks small, significant internal damage may have occurred
Wound care at home
Keep the wound clean and dry as instructed by your surgical team
Change dressings as directed — do not allow the wound to become soaked
Elevate your hand above heart level when resting to reduce swelling
Do not apply pressure or squeeze the wound
Activity restrictions
No heavy lifting or gripping with the injured hand until cleared by your surgeon
No return to work with high-pressure equipment until fully healed and surgeon-approved
Wear hand therapy splint or protective device as prescribed
Attend all scheduled hand therapy appointments
Medications
Take all prescribed antibiotics for the full course — do not stop early
Take pain medication as prescribed — do not exceed recommended doses
Take tetanus booster if provided and ensure your records are updated
Return to emergency department immediately if you develop
Increasing pain, swelling, or redness in the hand or finger
Numbness, tingling, or weakness in any finger
Loss of color in the finger — white, blue, or purple discoloration
Fever greater than 38.5 degrees Celsius or chills
Wound drainage, pus, or foul smell from the wound
Rapid worsening of any symptoms
Follow-up
Hand surgery follow-up within 48–72 hours of discharge — do not miss this appointment
Long-term hand therapy may be required for months
Most patients experience some lasting stiffness, pain, or sensory changes — this is expected
Inform your occupational health provider and employer about this injury
Psychological support is available if you experience distress related to functional changes
