Discharge instructions for confirmed or recovered Nipah Virus Infection
You have been treated for Nipah virus infection, a rare and serious viral illness
Follow-up with your infectious disease specialist and neurologist is essential
Public health authority will be in contact with you regarding ongoing monitoring requirements
Activity and recovery
Rest and gradual return to activity as neurologic recovery allows
Neurologic deficits may persist: 15% of survivors have long-term deficits
Occupational therapy or physiotherapy referral if motor deficits present
Do not drive until cleared by your neurologist if you experienced seizures
Isolation and transmission prevention
Follow all public health isolation instructions until officially cleared
Virus may persist in body fluids: abstain from unprotected contact until public health clearance
Inform close contacts and household members to monitor for symptoms for 21 days from last exposure
Medication instructions
Take all prescribed antiepileptic medications as directed; do not stop without physician guidance
Return for any scheduled blood tests or monitoring visits
Return to emergency department immediately for
New or recurrent fever with headache or confusion
Seizure or loss of consciousness
Weakness, numbness, or speech difficulty (signs of relapsed encephalitis)
Breathing difficulty or chest pain
Any neurologic symptom returning after initial recovery
Prevention of future infection
Avoid raw date palm sap consumption in endemic regions
Avoid contact with fruit bats, their urine, feces, or saliva
Avoid fruits partially eaten by bats or fallen fruit in endemic areas
Wear appropriate PPE if working in animal healthcare or farming in endemic areas
Seek medical attention immediately if new fever within 21 days of exposure
